From immigration and welfare reform, to climate change and the effects of an ageing society, there is widespread evidence that voters are increasingly frustrated with the responses of governments to major public issues. In many European countries, as well as in the US, disaffection with the traditional political parties is translating into a growth in support for parties of protest and alienation, such as UKIP in the UK or the Front National in France. In other cases, people are simply choosing to disengage from political life, with a weakening level of trust in political institutions.

The first in a series of three major talks on current international affairs, in this opening lecture the Rt. Hon. Peter Hain MP will explore the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
He will analyse how the international community should respond to the challenges posed by the rapid rise to power of an organisation which, a little over a year ago, would have been known only to regional specialists and security consultants but which now headlines our national news.

More than twelve USW academics shared their thoughts on what International Women’s Day means to them.
The feature also serves to highlight some of the important research taking place at the University, in areas as diverse as genetics, human rights, governance and reproductive health.

The University of South Wales, together with Swansea, Cardiff, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Liverpool, has been successful in its application to deliver on the Welsh Government’s commitment to deliver a Public Policy Institute for Wales (PPI). This Institute will offer advice to Ministers on key aspects of policy right across the sphere, including health, transport, education, agriculture and so on. The PPI will be officially launched next Monday in Cardiff.
