Short Courses

Social science student

The Centre for Social Policy provides a number of short courses intended to assist organisations with providing opportunities for continuing professional development. There are a number of courses presented here. Courses will be delivered in a range of modes including block delivery and traditional 'day release’ and can be taken as 'stand alone’ training courses or University accredited modules (20 postgraduate credits).

These include:

  • Political Awareness This course aims to develop participants’ understanding of the importance of political awareness in the workplace. Being aware of the 'political’ context of organisations and those working within them is an important part of self awareness and development. The context too relating to collaborative working, involving citizens in decisions and new legislation including the Future Generations Act, Wales are all considered.
  • Governance and Scrutiny This short course aims to encourage participant reflection on good governance and the key issues associated with this including effective challenge and scrutiny. Participants will develop their understanding about improving governance and focus on issues of collaborative and shared governance within services and between organisations.
  • Understanding and Challenging Public Sector Performance This course aims to develop an understanding of concepts of performance and develop participants’ ability to understand data and to challenge effectively the performance of a public organisation.

Options for University-based study

The University offers study from Foundation degree level, to BA (Hons), Masters and also Doctorate level within public services.

Public Sector Management courses can be taken as traditional academic year long awards or credits can be built up in blocks. We would be happy to work closely with any organisation seeking to develop a Foundation Degree or any other award where work based and existing learning is accredited.

Our aim is that through the Centre, we will offer a range of opportunities for public service professionals, at all levels of their organisations, seeking to advance their careers and to redress the national skills shortage set out by the Welsh Government in For Our Future (2008).

Doctorate in Business Administration (Public Management)

We are interested in Doctorate proposals in any of the areas listed in About Us, whether singly or in combination. We are periodically in a position to offer bursaries, though typically our students are funded by outside bodies.
